October 2012 and we did it again! An incredible camp in the wilderness! We based ourselves at Hasanur and drove and went on nature walks . Game sightings included Elephants, Gaur, Wild dogs, black buck chital, barking deer and wild boar and Tiger pug marks in some places. A number of birds of the Eastern Ghats were sighted. Places visited were Germalam, Thalamalai, Geddaisaal, Thengumarada, Ittarai, and Jodigerai. While Photos merely depict the ‘been there done that’ feeling, Heavenly places like Jodigerai belies description in text or photos and is best appreciated by being there in person to soak in the icy cool mountain air!

A word about our host, Mr. B.Krishnakumar. KK, as I shall refer to him, has adopted a noble method to prevent Tigers and Leopards from being wiped out in these jungles due to carcass poisoning. As the natural prey base for the big cats is low in these ranges, the cats turn to cattle lifting on occasions. Every time cattle are killed, KK is informed and after verifying the kill was indeed by a big cat, KK compensates the cattle owner in cash from his own funds, with a return assurance from the farmer that the carcass will not be poisoned. Carcass poisoning is one of the causes for the obliteration of big cats in these jungles. When a carcass is poisoned, many animals and birds that feed off the carcass die in the process - Hyena's , jackals, sloth bears, monitor lizards and carrion eating birds of prey. So far, KK has compensated farmers for over 300 kills and the cats get to live on. As a person, KK is an extremely passionate wildlife conservator and kept us good company on the forays into the jungles.

As always, there is music playing the background in slideshow mode!
